Microsoft’s flagship e-mail program shows age If you think that Microsoft Outlook 2013 would get dramatic new features and improvements like other Office 2013 applications, you’re wrong. For the most part, Microsoft Outlook 2013 will remain much the same as the 2010 version. Here’s what changed:

The entire app has a flattened look that fits the design language of Windows 8. The whole app is monochrome, with lots of white and gray and occasional blue accents. For me, this color scheme makes it difficult to distinguish between different parts of the interface. There are no more icons and everything is heavy text. At the bottom you will find sections for email, calendar, people, tasks and more. Buttons and icons are gone, leaving room for minimalist text (function () {(‘review-app-page-desktop’);});

Microsoft Outlook 2013 has a touch mode that displays the same menus as other Office 2013 applications. The bar contains frequently used commands that respond, delete, move, mark, and select. This is great and gives Microsoft Outlook 2013 a great touch experience.

You can now pinch to zoom in on the calendar to switch between day, week, and month views. If you are in another part of Microsoft Outlook 2013 in addition to the calendar, you can now hover your mouse over the calendar section to display a pop-up in the calendar and the tasks for the day. The calendar also shows weather information for your location.

Microsoft Lync is still fully integrated with Microsoft Outlook 2013, so you can view your colleague’s status and start a voice or video call directly from Microsoft Outlook 2013.

Although the email view is a bit difficult to read due to the monochrome color scheme, Microsoft Outlook 2013 has a much better view of people. Contacts now retrieves information from online sources such as Facebook and Linkedin if you have linked these services to your Microsoft account.

Microsoft Outlook 2013 merges duplicate contacts and creates a contact card for the merged information. If your contact has an image, the image is displayed as a thumbnail next to the contact. It’s weird that Microsoft didn’t include this in the email view in Microsoft Outlook 2013, which would help differentiate between different emails.

Even more confusing is the lack of threaded messages in Microsoft Outlook 2013. You still need to look up previous emails in the conversation. Oddly enough, Microsoft’s proprietary Mail app on Windows 8 and Windows RT has threaded messages.

Another annoying change is the messages sent by Microsoft Outlook 2013. There’s no way to discard them all in bulk, so you close a lot of notifications if Microsoft Outlook 2013 goes back online. Microsoft also lost the ability to respond to email sent to the message, which was a very useful feature.

If you don’t like Outlook 2010, Microsoft Outlook 2013 won’t beat you. While there are some useful new features, its sleek interface and missing features make Office 2013 feel like an outdated e-mail program.
